2024 Biennial Conference highlights

The 2024 Oral History Australia (OHA) Biennial Conference is now complete. Thanks to all the presenters and organisers. The next conference will be in Adelaide in 2026.

Highlights of the 2024 conference, which was held in Naarm /Melbourne from 21 to 24 November, included:

  • the keynote address by the legendary Alessandro Portelli
  • closing plenary with commissioners from the Yoorrook Justice Commission
  • awards – the 2024 Hazel de Berg Award for Excellence in Oral History and the OHA book and media awards
  • launch of the 2024 issue of the OHA journal Studies in Oral History.

Awards

In brief, the award winners were:

  • Hazel de Berg Award – Barry York
  • OHA Book Award – joint winners – Carla Pascoe Leahy for Becoming a Mother: An Australian History and Jordana Silverstein for Cruel Care: A History of Children at our Borders
    • highly commended – Geraldine Fela for Critical Care: Nurses on the Frontline of Australia’s AIDS Crisis
  • OHA Media Award – joint winners – Jennifer Rose  / Centre for Multicultural Youth (additional research by Soo-Lin Quek and Fran Linardi) for ‘The Centre for Multicultural Youth: 35 Years of Shaping Culture’ and Tegan Burns and Goompi Give and Grow Ltd for ‘Connection to Quandamooka Country: Goompi Foreshore’
    • highly commended – Richard Lowenstein and Martie Lowenstein Nash for ‘Don’t be too polite girls’ and Alexandra Pierce for ‘Women, Conscription, War’.
